Here I placed a lot of different various stuff mixed together.

Can I collect tadpoles? In Denmark you may gather very small quantities of tadpoles of the species: Smooth newt, common toad, european common frog and edible frog. When tadpoles reach the adult state, they should be released as close to the point of collection as possible. If you keep them / hurt them, it is punishable. Do not collect any other species one of these, it's illeagal! (Myself, I think tadpoles should remain in the wild and not be taken by humans)! |
Invasive species

Short info about the term: "Invasive"
Invasive species is a new term in Denmark, it is not normal for our Nordic fauna to get "settlers". The word "inovasive species" covers plant and animal species brougt by humans from one part of the world to another, in order then to influence the flora and fauna negatively. In Denmark's flora such as giant hogweed is a glaring example of an invasive species. Invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity. In Denmark we only have two invasive herptile species; the red eared slider and the balkan frog.
What can I do to remedy Danish nature from invasive species? In this case, it’s important that every citizen tries to make an effort. In addition it is also vital that we all change our behaviour with respect - to hold and dispose of exotic animals and plants in the correct way. |

My reporting area: Odsherred
Odsherred is my home and my everyday herp spot.
Beautiful beaches and steep hills surround this magnificent area - Odsherred is one of Denmark's most beautiful locations. Here you can find most of the Danish hereptiles. The countryside and the nature in Odsherred is greatly influenced by it’s old geological origin, which clearly shows it’s tracks. When im out herping I see several places that have magnificent hillsides along the coastal line. The landscape is dominated by sandy ereas and heather clads. In Odsherred you can find places with unspoiled landscapes of cliffs, grasslands, hedgerows and old forests. Odsherred is as well home to some of the finest beaches in all of Europe.
During the last Ice Age, glacier tongues made what we refer to as “Odsherredbuerne”. The ocean waves eroded the coast and several places there are steep cliffs, such as by Klintebjerg. In Odshered you can find some of Denmark's largest heaths with scattered vegetation. Because of the arid climate at Odsherreds cliffs, they have become habitats for plants and insects that usually belongs to the Central and Eastern Europe. Here lives a valuable stock of amphibia.
Odsherred contains lots of original moorland and holds significant concentrations of birds. Saltbæk Vig is one of Denmarks main roosting sites for ducks, geese, shorebirds and birds of prey. There are several bird sanctuaries scattered around Odsherred. Of all the Danish places I've visited, this will always be closest to me, there is something very special about this place - which I can never forget.

ProtectionA short word about protection of the species in Denmark.
Many of Denmark's animal and plant species are ( indirectly) protected because their habitats are protected. _________________________________ We have no species that are unique to our herpefauna, all of our reptiles and amphibians can be found in foreign countries. But there are a variety of habitats in Denmark, which helps to maintain some (international) threatened populations. In Denmark there are several ways the goverment can chose to protect an animal. Protection of species can occur either as a complete protection - for example: It's illegal to kill the animal by law. But it could also be restricted by various rules. A large number of species is protected by EU directives and international conventions. All of the Danish species of both reptiles and amphibians are protected to a greater or lesser extent. If you want to know more, you can read all of the Danish laws and restrictions regarding flora/fauna on the following webpages. Or chek this page.
